The sensor of the E427 is an 11 megapixel, 4008 X 2672, full 35mm form factor (36.1mm X 24.0mm) with integrated electronic shutter.
The E427-i provides the highest resolution possible in color mydriatic fundus photography. Additional pixel resolution is not resolved due to the limitations of ocular media. In actual practice, the E427 offers just noticeable increase in resolution over the E3.
While FA’s may be performed at 11 mpixel resolution, it is not recommended, as the amount of light per pixel with normal excitation strobe power is sufficiently low as to compromise image quality. When used to perform FA’s, the E427-i may be binned to increase sensitivity at the expense of resolution. The binned resolution of just under 3 megabytes provides good quality and reasonable sensitivity. For the ultimate in image quality, a color E427 may be combined with a monochrome E3 (on fundus cameras which support 2 camera backs or if the backs are rotated between color and FA.
The E427 is available for most common fundus cameras.
