MegaVision Assists with Syriac Medical Palimpsest SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb. 23 - MegaVision President Ken Boydston announced today that he will assist a team of imaging scientists as Camera Engineer as they digitally image the Syriac Medical Palimpsest this month at the request of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The imaging is taking place at the Walters Art Museum and is part of an ongoing project to digitize manuscripts and make them available online.
A palimpsest is an ancient manuscript (usually on parchment) that has been written on multiple times, with the earlier layers still partially visible. The Syriac Medical Palimpsest is thought to contain works by Galen, a second-century Greek physician, surgeon, and philosopher. The advanced imaging technology utilizes an integrated spectral large-format camera back and LED illumination system. The images are processed to render the Galen text legible for study. The team will collect data on the entire palimpsest. MegaVision software, Photoshoot, will be used to coordinate the various aspects of the image capture process. The images will be captured using the MegaVision E6 camera back and two EurekaLight™ LED panels that generate 13 narrow bands of wavelengths without generating heat. This technology safeguards the manuscript pages during imaging from further deterioration. The imaging team has worked together on several significant projects that include the Archimedes Palimpsest Program and National Treasures at the Library of Congress.
