MegaVision Participates in National Geographic Filming

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb.18 -- MegaVision Inc. announced today that it hosted a film crew from National Geographic at the MegaVision offices where imaging of the Qeiyafa Ostracon had taken place. The ostracon, a pottery shard inscribed with writing, was discovered at the site of the Khirbet Qeiyafa Archeological Project in July 2008 in an area known as the Elah Fortress, in Israel. The ostracon was dated to the time of King David, approximately 3,000 years ago. The film crew was preparing footage to be used in an upcoming National Geographic Special exploring recent discoveries of the Middle Kingdom years in the Middle East.

In November 2008, MegaVision was asked to provide multi-spectral imaging of the writing on the shard. MegaVision's EurekaVision™ used 12 bands of spectral imaging, along with narrow-band LED illumination and high spatial resolution (39 megapixels), to produce data files of the ostracon.

The results of the imaging more clearly revealed the text, allowing scholars to study the ancient Proto-Canaanite script. These images enabled a proposed reconstruction of the script that indicated the social responsibilities of the ancient Hebrew culture.

The film will be completed in the fall of 2010 and is slated to air on PBS in late November or early December.

The photographing of rare and damaged manuscripts and artifacts is an area of expertise for MegaVision, and the company's services are regularly requested by both private organizations and governmental agencies engaged in cultural heritage imaging.
